As a longtime (forever) member of ECA I am personally pleased to announce that the Urban Communication Foundation has increased the amount of the ECA Applied Urban Communication Research Grant to $2500.
The Urban Communication Association initiated the ECA Applied Urban Communication Research Grant in 2007 when Lewis Freeman received the first grant for “Communicating ‘Urban’ in an Environmental Magnet Elementary School.”
Subsequent award winners include: Al Mueller for a grant to research Eisenhower’s Rhetoric of the Road; Erik Garrett for an analysis of The Rhetorical Importance of Public Space in Low-Income Urban Communities; Mary Kahl for The Design and Discourses of Elevated Urban Parks: and Douglas Marshall, for The Communicative Importance of Public Ritual: The New Orleans Jazz Funeral.
The Urban Communication Foundation is committed to an interdisciplinary approach promoting research that enhances our understanding of communication patterns in the urban environment and encourages collaboration between communication scholars, urban planners and policy makers.
From “Applied Communication” to “Voices of Diversity” I encourage you to think outside the box, beyond your specific interest group. The Applied Urban Communication Research Grant is awarded to original research that focuses on the changing nature of urban space and its relationship to community.
