The Health Communication Interest Group invites submissions for ECA's 115th Annual Convention in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The 2024 convention theme is “Currents" which represents our convention location on the banks of the Charles River in Cambridge. We especially encourage submissions that fit this theme. Programming may focus on ways on how ideas are the currents that shape our discipline in today's world. This may include currents in teaching, scholarship, or the practice of health communication. Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • How do historical currents shape the contemporary study of health communication?
  • How can the health communication discipline move ideas and theories into a wider body of knowledge?
  • How do theories currently shape the practice of health communication?
  • What health communication ideas, topics, or concepts have been challenged, created or renewed recently?
  • What impact do current technologies have on health communication pedagogy?
  • What current trends and movements are changing the direction of teaching, learning, practicing, and theorizing health communication?

Consider the many ways that health communication embraces the concept of innovation as you prepare your submission!

We invite the following types of submissions:

  1. Individual Papers
  2. Panel Discussions

Submission guidelines:

Submissions must not have been presented at another conference and can only be submitted to one interest group at ECA. Our division will award Top Paper Awards, including one Top Student Paper Award. Student-led submissions (i.e. student is first author, faculty member is co-author) are eligible for the Top Paper Awards.

You must include the following Statement of Professional Responsibility with all papers and panels:

In submitting the attached paper/panel, I/We recognize that an accepted paper/panel is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/We agree to register for the ECA convention, pay fees, and present the work.
