The Argumentation & Forensics Interest Group invites you to submit individual completed papers, as well as panel, debate and roundtable discussion proposals, for the 113th Annual ECA Convention to be held April 7 to 9 in Philadelphia, PA.
We encourage submissions that explore the nexus of argumentation and the 2022 Convention theme, (RE)UNION. As the first in-person gathering of our community in two years, this theme invites us to celebrate ECA 2022 as an occasion of joyous reconnection, as well as an opportunity to build new connections within our community and beyond. In this spirit, we seek to make ECA 2022 a space for reflection, deliberation and learning as we emerge out of a global pandemic and into unchartered waters to consider how our discipline(s) will contribute to a post-pandemic world.
The Argumentation & Forensics Interest Group considers submissions that relate to all areas of research, practice and pedagogy associated with argumentation as a process and product of communication. We encourage scholarship that addresses a wide range of argumentation topics across a variety of contexts, modalities, methodologies and theoretical perspectives. Submissions on topics ranging from historical and contemporary controversies to activism and political campaign debates are welcome. We also provide a venue for sharing innovations in teaching and coaching argumentation on campus, in the competitive sphere of forensics and in the community writ large.
How to Submit Your Work to the Argumentation & Forensics Interest Group
ECA utilizes Attendee Interactive to manage submissions and reviews. ECA will send an email to members and update the Convention section of its website (ecasite.org) with a link to the submission platform. To submit your work, you will be prompted to log in using ECA-specific credentials (i.e., credentials separate from those you may use to submit work to conferences hosted by other organizations, even if those organizations use Attendee Interactive). If you do not yet have an account in ECA’s instance of Attendee Interactive, you will be able to create one.

To be considered complete and eligible for review, your paper or panel proposal must include the following Statement of Professional Responsibility:
In submitting the attached paper/panel proposal, I/we recognize that an accepted paper/panel proposal is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/we agree to register for the ECA convention, pay fees and present the work. I/We understand that presenters with last-minute emergencies should take all possible measures to arrange an alternate presenter, and communicate their plans to both the Interest Group Planner and the ECA Vice President.
Submission Guidelines for Individual Papers
Completed individual papers should be written in accordance with standards set by the Chicago Manual of Style, the American Psychological Association (APA) or the Modern Language Association (MLA). If the paper has multiple authors, the author submitting the paper should indicate which author(s) will present the paper at the convention in the event the paper is accepted. Any personal identifying information should be removed from the submission document.
Submissions of completed individual papers should include the following information.
- Paper title
- A one-page abstract that includes the required Statement of Professional Responsibility
- An indication that the submission is a debut submission (i.e., written by author(s) who have not previously presented at a regional or national convention) or a student submission, if applicable.
- Any special requests, including scheduling requests and those related to accessibility under the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
- Audio/Visual requests (please note that budgetary constraints may affect the availability of A/V equipment; be prepared to present your paper appropriately even in the absence of A/V availability)
- File upload (.docx and .pdf formats are accepted)
Submission Guidelines for Panel Proposals (including debate and roundtable discussion proposals)
Panel proposals should be written in accordance with standards set by the Chicago Manual of Style, the American Psychological Association (APA) or the Modern Language Association (MLA).
Submission of program/panel proposals should include the following information.
- Panel title
- Names, institutional affiliations, phone numbers and email addresses of all participants
- Indication of which participant(s) will serve as panel chair and panel respondent, where applicable (please note that chairs should not also serve as respondents)
- Titles and abstracts for each paper or presentation, where applicable
- Program copy (not to exceed 75 words) as it should appear in the final convention program
- A detailed rationale (not to exceed one page) explaining the worthiness of the proposal for presentation. If proposing a debate, please include the proposition to be debated by participants.
- The required Statement of Professional Responsibility
