ECA 2015 Convention - Media Ecology Association - Call for Submissions

Media Ecology Association

Call for Papers 2015

106th Eastern Communication Association Convention

Deliberation: Philadelphia
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Sheraton Society Hill Hotel

April 22–26, 2015

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2014

The Media Ecology Association, an affiliate association of the Eastern Communication Association, invites the submission of competitive papers, thematic program/panel proposals, and innovative programming alternatives (e.g., workshop sessions, roundtable discussions, symposia, debates, open forums, community programs, etc.) for the 106th annual convention of the ECA.

Deliberation is where ideas are shared in groups then debated, advanced, molded, altered, and shaped into the foundation of our democracy. The Eastern Communication Association is the oldest professional communication association in the United States, and its convention in 2015 will be held in Philadelphia, a town that dates back to our first public deliberations. We strive in 2015 to honor the spirit of launching forth ideas into a public space for deliberative consideration. Thus, the theme for 2015 is “Deliberation: Philadelphia.”

The convention planners aim to create a space where carefully crafted ideas are put forth for public consideration. We wish to highlight completed papers and deliberative, audience-drawing and audience-involved panels that may not include the convention theme in their titles but encourage public consideration of ideas or debate the merit and direction of our scholarship and pedagogy. Creating this intentional space honors the location and ECA history.

Co-sponsorship of panels between MEA and an ECA Interest Group is especially encouraged, and with a deliberation emphasis may be selected as a Spotlight Panel (see information below) or special submission. Potential co-sponsored panels should be submitted to the MEA Program Planner (James Morrison: james.morrison@bc.edu), the Interest Group Chair of the potentially involved group, and the Primary Convention Planner (J. Kanan Sawyer: ecaphilly2015@gmail.com). As with paper and traditional panels, all co-sponsored panel submissions must go through peer review and receive acceptance by both the MEA and the co-sponsoring Interest Group.

Spotlight Panel Submissions and Second Life Series

The ECA will be offering opportunities at this convention for its members to be heard by the wider community by “spotlighting” five sessions. These sessions will be Interest Group paper panels, basic course panels, special sessions, or any other submission in which presenters are willing to share their ideas with a broader audience. Local media will be invited to cover these sessions, which will be spotlighted in the program. Some sessions (with presenter consent) will also be part of our Second Life series, whereby ECA members at off-site locations will be able to participate “virtually.” Please indicate on your submission if you are willing or would like to have your paper or panel as part of either or both of these sessions.

Student Scholars

In addition, the Fifth Annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (USC) will run concurrently with the ECA convention on Friday and Saturday (April 24 and 25). The deadline for submissions of USC papers is December 19, 2014, to enable scholarly student papers from the fall semester to be submitted. All student scholar submissions must have a faculty sponsor. Competitive papers, poster presentations, and panel proposals should be submitted by the deadline before midnight EST. Submission Email: ECAundergrad2015@gmail.com.
