The Interpretation and Performance Studies Interest Group invites submission of competitive papers, performances, thematic program/panel proposals, and innovative programming alternatives (e.g., roundtables, symposia, debates, open forums, and community programs) for the 105th annual convention of the Eastern Communication Association.
Founded as a haven for religious dissenters, Providence is a city intimately shaped by discourses of disagreement. This year’s conference theme, “Communities of Dissent,” is inspired by the tradition of dissent that has marked the city’s long and notable history. Dissent can be transformational, a lively experiment in tolerance and freedom of conscience. When accepted and encouraged, dissent can be an important monitoring force, providing correctives for unethical behavior, unfavorable decision-making, and insensitivity to others’ needs. Dissent can also be dangerous, undermining sound and orderly government, and fueling conflict and aggression.
In keeping with the 2014 convention theme, we ask you to consider papers, performances, thematic panels, and other programs that explore related issues and questions, and how these topics and questions intersect with the critical, performance based, research, and/or theoretical issues related to our interest group. The study and performance of communities, including those of dissent, is important to performance studies scholars and practitioners. From the tribal and colonial communities of dissent associated with the founding of Providence in 1636 to contemporary online communities of dissent that debate fair use, such as street artist and Rhode Island School of Design alumnus Shepard Fairey’s use of an AP photograph of then-Senator Barack Obama in making the Hope poster, we encourage submissions that address performances of dissent rooted in the historical and popular culture of Providence and beyond. Reflecting on debates about liveness and mediatization, what kind of “lively” experiments might we perform at the convention? What roles can communitas play in communities of dissent? We welcome all submissions, and hope that you will join us in Providence, the “Creative Capital,” for what promises to be an especially lively ECA convention!
Submissions to the Interpretation and Performance Studies Interest Group must adhere to the following guidelines:
In order to receive full consideration, all completed papers and program/panel proposals must be received by Tuesday, October 15, 2013.
Submissions must be sent via email, with attachment(s) in MS Word format, to the Program Planner Andrée E. C. Betancourt, Northern Virginia Community College ABetancourt@nvcc.edu. The email subject line should include the text “ECA 2014 submission” and the title of the paper/panel/program. The email text should include any requests for technology.
All submissions must include a statement of professional responsibility (see below). Please note if the submitted materials (including previous drafts and/or similar versions) have been submitted for publication and/or delivered in the form of another “public presentation.”
Competitive Papers
Abstracts or incomplete papers are not acceptable in this category. Submissions of completed papers should be sent via two separate Microsoft Word files:
1. The first file should include the title page with author(s) name and contact information (affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and email address), and a 100 - 150 word abstract. If the paper has multiple authors, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention.
2. The second file should contain the text of the paper starting with the 100 - 150 word abstract. All author identifiers should be removed (excluding previous scholarly works cited in the paper and listed in the reference section). Excluding notes and references, papers should be no longer than 25 double-spaced pages. Papers longer than 25 pages may not be reviewed. Optional: Authors who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention are welcome to include the word “Debut” in the paper header. Students are welcome to include the word “Student” in the paper header.
Program/Panel Proposals
All program/panel submissions should be sent as single Microsoft Word file, and must include:
1. A thematic title for the program/panel.
2. The names, institutional affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of all participants (including chairs and respondents, if applicable). We request that presenters not serve as chairs, and that chairs not serve as respondents.
3. Titles and 100 – 150 word abstracts for each paper or presentation.
4. The program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.
5. A detailed rationale for the program/panel. If you are submitting a performance panel as a paper session or as a panel discussion, be sure to clearly indicate that the proposed session is 1) all papers, 2) all performance, or 3) a mix of presentational formats.
Statement of Professional Responsibility
When submitting a paper or proposal for review, the following statement MUST be included. Papers and panels without this statement will not be programmed.
“In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this paper or program/panel if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay the required fees.”
