ECA 2018 Convention

Media Communication Interest Group Call for Papers & Panels

109th Annual ECA Convention

“Building Bridges”
Pittsburg, Pennsylvania

Omni William Penn

April 25-April 29, 2018

Submission Deadline: Sunday, October 15, 2017

Pittsburgh, also known as the city of bridges, will be home to the 2018 Eastern Communication Association Convention. Pittsburgh has a unique topography, being situated at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela, which forms the Ohio River. When a city is located on water, bridges span the horizon.

The bridges of Pittsburgh play an important role in the city's infrastructure. Without the 446 bridges interlacing the city, Pittsburgh would be a region of isolated communities. Just as the bridges in the city connect communities, communication has the opportunity to build bridges within and outside of our discipline, creating countless opportunities for research, teaching, and service.

The 2018 theme, Building Bridges, invites the exploration of cross-disciplinary research and encourages finding possibilities for connecting our research to theory and practice, creating new approaches to teaching, and collaborating with communities for service and civic engagement opportunities. How can we build bridges within our discipline? How do we communicate and engage others when the bridges are broken? What are ways in which communication creates opportunities for new connections and for building new bridges? What can we gain by fostering communication among our many communities in order to further promote connection?

We’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts, seeing you present your research, and engaging with you in the city of Pittsburgh. Together, we can build a wonderful bridge that connects us to our constituents and communities.

See the below list of Interest Group and Affiliate Organization Planners, Special Session Directors, and Associate Organization for the 2018 Convention. Please include the Statement of Professional Responsibility on all submissions:

In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/We agree to register for the 2018 ECA Convention, pay fees, and present in Pittsburgh. I/We understand that presenters with last minute emergencies must make arrangements as possible for an alternate presenter as well as communicate their absences to both the Interest Group Planner and ECA VP; no shows will be removed from the official program.

To have time to confirm programming into the 2018 convention, notification of acceptance will not be given until the review process and initial session programming is drafted. (We do not wish to rank acceptances by sending out select notifications and having others wait.)

NOTE: A single paper or panel should only be submitted to a single interest group or affiliate organization for consideration.
