About the College: The Mike Curb college of Arts, Media, and Communication includes the departments of Art, Cinema and Television Arts, Communication Studies, Journalism, Music, and Theatre. The college has approximately 110 tenured/tenure-track faculty and enrolls over 5,300 undergraduate and graduate students. The college hosts the following centers, institutes, and community outreach initiatives: The Entertainment Industry Institute, the Center for Visual Communication (VISCOM), The Music Therapy Wellness Clinic, Teenage Drama Workshop, and Youth Orchestra. Qualifications:
The Department of Communication Studies at California State University, Northridge seeks to fill a tenure-track position in Communication and Technology at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Department invites applications from scholars with research specialty in the social, economic, and cultural impact of communication technology. We are particularly interested in scholars who use global, historical, interdisciplinary, political economic, feminist, postcolonial, and/or critical race approaches. Areas of specialization might include: Social Media, Digital Arts, Posthumanism, Surveillance Studies, Online Social Movements, Software/Code Studies, Video Games, and Cultural Analytics. In addition to a Ph.D. in Communication Studies or related field from an accredited institution at time of hire, the successful candidate will have the following qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching, demonstrated potential for scholarly activity resulting in publication or equivalent in Communication and Technology, and active participation in the discipline of Communication. Desirable qualifications include a commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as expertise that complements the strengths of existing faculty. Applicants must demonstrate experience and commitment to working with an ethnically and culturally diverse student population, as well as an interest in community outreach.
At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.
Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Communication and Technology and secondary areas as needed; develop curriculum in areas of specialization; advise and mentor students; engage in a systematic program of scholarship resulting in dissemination of that work; serve on department, college, and university committees; participate in the department’s commitment to serving diverse populations, service learning, and community-based partnerships. CSUN is a learning-centered university. The successful candidate will be expected to join faculty and staff in a commitment to active learning, to assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate.
