The School of Communication Studies at Ohio University invites applications for the position of School Director to commence prior to the beginning of the 2018-2019 academic year.
The School of Communication Studies seeks a teacher-scholar-leader who will complement the interests of our faculty, bring demonstrated commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education, and exhibit appreciation for diverse theoretical and methodological approaches to communication. The Director will promote excellence in teaching, research, and creative activity. We seek a colleague to lead collaborative decision-making, promote shared governance, and advocate for the students, faculty, and staff of the School. The ideal candidate should have experience in administrative work (such as prior service as a department chair, director of undergraduate or graduate studies, etc.) that would include tasks such as managing a budget, class scheduling, facilitating faculty meetings, developing and enforcing policies and procedures, interacting with alumni, and promoting diversity and inclusion. In addition to primary work on the Athens campus, the Director provides oversight of the School’s curriculum on the university’s six regional campuses. Our program also encompasses E-learning, including online programs such as a bachelor’s degree completion program and an applied master’s degree program taught by Athens and regional campus faculty.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in Communication Studies and have a strong record of teaching and scholarship commensurate with appointment as a tenured faculty member at an advanced rank. Full professor preferred. The person hired will be appointed to a five-year term as Director (with the possibility of renewal) and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in her/his area of specialization.
The School of Communication Studies (http://www.ohiocommstudies.com/) is one of five schools housed in Ohio University’s nationally recognized Scripps College of Communication. The College is a designated Center of Excellence in the State of Ohio. On the Athens campus, the School offers B.S.C. and Ph.D. degrees in programs with approximately 450 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students. In addition to their academic work on campus, members of the School’s faculty serve as leaders in regional and national scholarly organizations. The School’s undergraduate and graduate students also actively participate and serve in professional associations as well as campus organizations such as Lambda Pi Eta and the National Communication Association Student Club. The School is also the home of one of the nation’s oldest and finest intercollegiate forensics programs.
Chartered in 1804, Ohio University is the oldest university in the Northwest Territory. Enrollment at the Athens campus is approximately 21,000 students with more than 7,500 additional students on the regional campuses. First-year undergraduate students average in the top 25% nationally in GPA and standardized test scores. Students from all 50 states and 104 countries are enrolled in OU.
