Short Course 6: Diversity Within One Mountaineer Nation: Bringing a Freedom of Inclusiveness to the Media and Society Classroom

This 90-minute short course details the history of LGBTQ issues and inclusion in American society throughout the decades, beginning with the First National Gay Rights Organization founded in 1950 and finishing with the 2016 Summer Olympic Games and Orlando nightclub shootings. Notable definitions, the Kinsey (1948) Scale and the Rouchlin (1972) Heterosexual Questionnaire are examined, as along with Title IX and Title VII political and economic implications. The significance of how the media acts as an agent of sexuality socialization and gender identity is discussed, along with available campus resources for students, who may consider becoming an ally for the LGBTQ community.
